Townsville City Council is investing $165,000 to replace five timber pedestrian bridges and a viewing platform at some of the city’s most popular parks and pathways.
Townsville Mayor Jenny Hill said workers had already started upgrading three bridges at the Palmetum.
“The Palmetum is a wonderful place to visit and Council is improving three bridges that have deteriorated over time,” Cr Hill said.
“We’re replacing the timber joists and bearers with a fibreglass composite material which is much more resilient than wood.”
Division 6 Councillor Suzy Batkovic said Council was also improving a viewing platform near a popular pathway at Douglas.
“The Freshwater Drive platform is a regular pit stop for people exercising on the Riverway Circuit and these works can be completed without closing the pathway,” Cr Batkovic said.
“Further down the Circuit, Council will be restoring the footbridge at Ashburton Place at Douglas. Workers will have to close the bridge to replace the decking and handrails but there is another crossing nearby.”
Division 2 Councillor Sue Blom said Council was also restoring a damaged footbridge in Burdell.
“Workers have removed the timber decking from the footbridge at Kahana Avenue Park,” Cr Blom said.
“The design work has been completed and the improvements should be finished in the next few weeks.”
Summary of works:
