Townsville City Council is encouraging locals to explore their local parks with a free Get Active Outdoors day this week.
The day is set to encourage residents of Mundingburra to live a healthier, more active lifestyle while playing park cricket with Australian cricketer Andrew Symonds and learning from fitness experts.
The Get Active Outdoors event will be held at Sherriff Park at Mundingburra this Sunday, 22 September from 3pm to 5pm.
Community and Cultural Development Committee Chair Councillor Colleen Doyle said it was a day not to be missed.
“Spending time outdoors works well to help improve physical health, but also has a positive impact on mental health,” Cr Doyle said.
“Spending time in your local park and enjoying fresh air can help create a sense of pride in your community.
“Have a crack at park cricket with Andrew Symonds or take part in three legged races, there’s going to be plenty of fun for the whole family.”
Councillor Maurie Soars said taking part in Get Active Outdoors was just one way to help bring Townsville’s parks to life.
“The Get Active Outdoors days are a prime opportunity for families to get out and explore their suburb’s park,” the veteran sports administrator said.
“Knowing about the facilities available close to home is just one way to be more motivated to live a healthier and happier life.
“It’s no secret that Townsville obesity rates are rising, and Council wants to do its part in promoting healthy lifestyles.”
