Lighting the way into Palmer Street

The lighting on the Palmer Street lighthouse will be officially turned on this Friday week.
The lighthouse was part of a project that included lighting the palm trees, brightening the intersection and new entry street signage.
Local Councillor Ann-Maree Greaney said the upgrades would add some new life to the Palmer Street precinct.
“This was a collaborative project with businesses on Palmer Street and it really has added such a nice ambience to the area,” Cr Greaney said.
“New lighting is so crucial to attracting people to the CBD both because of how it looks and for the safety of everyone visiting.
“I’m thrilled with the results of this project and I look forward to seeing what the Port does with the other end.”
The project was a follow on to the upgrades received as part of the Commonwealth Games preparation.
Managing Curator of the Maritime Museum of Townsville Robert de Jong said the museum was proud to be part of the refreshed look of Townsville’s culinary lifestyle hub.
“The Maritime Museum of Townsville, which owns this historic lighthouse, very much appreciates its refurbishment. It is an honour that this structure is now the icon of the Palmer Street precinct,” he said.
Port of Townsville CEO Ranee Crosby congratulated the Townsville City Council for its efforts to provide a much-needed facelift for the Palmer St precinct.
“This area enhances connections between the Townsville CBD and the Ross Creek waterfront to create a new identity while the refurbished lighthouse celebrates its historic past,” she said.
“The precinct also supports the nearby cruise ship facility, Quayside Terminal and works including new footpaths, signage and landscaping that are being undertaken to improve the amenity of the area.”
