Educators to head outside for Outdoor Classroom Day
Date published: 5 November 2019
Townsville City Council is encouraging educators to take their classes into the great outdoors this Thursday for Outdoor Classroom Day.
Targeted at local kindergartens, childcare centres, schools and after hours school care centres, the day is aimed to give kids a different perspective on learning.
Townsville Mayor Jenny Hill said it was important for educators to use Townsville’s great outdoor areas in their teaching.
“Townsville has a great climate all year round and plenty of accessible parks across town,” Cr Hill said.
“Research shows that learning outdoors improves children’s health, engages them with learning and leads them to have a greater connection with nature.
“This is a great opportunity to kickstart a lifelong love of Townsville’s wonderful natural spaces.”
Community and Cultural Development Chairperson Councillor Colleen Doyle said there was a great competition that educators could get involved in.
“Council is running an Outdoor Classroom Day competition that involves great prizes like marquees, hats and sunscreen,” Cr Doyle said.
“Educators across Townsville should get involved to give their students a chance to enjoy the outdoors, be sun smart and to also be in the running for some brilliant prizes.”
The competition also encourages local schools and child care centres to join the National Sun Smart Program before National Skin Cancer Action Week later this month.
To enter the competition, fill out the Outdoor Classroom Day and SunSmart Competition Form.
Competition closes 3pm Wednesday, 6 November.
