The Tzu Chi Foundation has donated nearly $150,000 to families and individuals needing extra support following the unprecedented monsoon.
The donations were passed on to 180 families at an event at Townsville Stadium on Saturday.
Townsville Mayor Jenny Hill thanked the Tzu Chi Foundation and all their volunteers for their generosity to help get Townsville back on their feet.
“On behalf of Townsville City Council, I would like to thank the Tzu Chi Foundation and their volunteers for the heart-warming donation for those in the Townsville region affected by the monsoon,” Cr Hill said.
“These donations will go a long way to helping these families return to some form of normality and get themselves back on track.
“North Queenslanders are resilient, but we definitely don’t have to do this alone and it is fantastic to see the outpour of support from across the country.”
Those who received the donations were identified by the Department of Communities, Department of Housing and the United Church.
Local Recovery and Resilience Group Chair Cr Les Walker said donations like this show the community is still in the thoughts of other Australians.
“The recovery process will be ongoing well into the future and it is important that the people who were impacted know that they haven’t been forgotten,” Cr Walker said.
“Hopefully the efforts of the Tzu Chi Foundation and their volunteers will comfort these families and let them know that there is still help available.”
Community and Cultural Development Committee Chair Cr Colleen Doyle said the donations included cash cards, eco-blankets, books and bamboo piggybanks.
“The Tzu Chi Foundation and their volunteers have been incredibly generous, and I know the community is incredibly grateful for all their support,” Cr Doyle said.
