Mosquito treatments continue across Townsville

Townsville City Council is continuing mosquito treatments across the city as the king tide recedes.
Ground treatments started early this week, and a helicopter began carrying out aerial treatments from yesterday.
Community Health and Environment Committee Chair Cr Ann-Maree Greaney said Council regularly monitors for an increase in mosquito larvae.
“Council maintains a regular mosquito treatment schedule and conducts extra treatments after periods of heavy rain and king tides,” Cr Greaney said.
“We do ask residents to take precautions to protect themselves against mosquitos by wearing long, loose-fitting clothing and using mosquito repellent.”
Local Recovery and Resilience Group (LRRG) Chair Cr Les Walker said mosquito treatments are an important part of the recovery process.
“Following the unprecedented monsoon – or in any cases of heavy rain – we do have to be conscious of an increase in mosquito larvae,” Cr Walker said.
“Since the end of the monsoonal weather, Council has treated almost 1800 hectares of breeding sites and will continue to treat these areas as required.
“We also worked with Queensland Health to conduct barrier treatments at all local schools to ensure our students are protected.”
