Townsville City Council is continuing to prioritise the city’s water security – investing $143.9 million on delivering water infrastructure upgrades in the 2019/20 Budget.
Townsville Mayor Jenny Hill said Council is totally committed providing long-term water security while creating jobs for locals.
“The new water pipeline is being built and expected to be finished next March, and the recycled water reuse scheme is also under construction,” Cr Hill said.
“These water infrastructure projects are another way Council is committed to building for our future.”
Cr Hill said $139.9 million was being invested delivering Council’s 3-point water security solution, after receiving funding from the Queensland Government.
“This money includes spending on infrastructure to deliver the pipeline and also operational expenditure to ensure the Water Smart Package gets delivered.”
The pipeline was funded by the Queensland Government, which provided $225 million to Townsville City Council to improve water security in Townsville – including $10 million for the Water Smart Package.
Townsville Water and Waste Committee Chair Cr Russ Cook said upgrades to water mains, pumps and pipes will allow Council to use water more efficiently.
“We all have to play our part in being water efficient and Council does that by making sure we maintain all our water assets and use them effectively,” Cr Cook said.
“Keeping our infrastructure in good working order is important to help save water and reduce costs for ratepayers.”
