Pinnacles Gallery repairs continuing

Townsville City Council is hoping it can showcase art exhibitions in Pinnacles Gallery by the end of the year.
The Gallery at Riverway has been closed since it was flooded during the unprecedented monsoon early this year.
Local Recovery and Resilience Group Chair Deputy Mayor Les Walker said the gallery is still feeling the effects of the monsoon.
“The gallery has had to cancel a number of exhibitions and another inspection has found more mould and water damage,” Cr Walker said.
“Work to repair the damage began in March but the mould and water issues mean the closure could extend into December.”
Infrastructure Services Committee Chair Cr Mark Molachino said Council is keen to reopen the gallery as soon as it can.
“The clean-up is a big project and the contractors are making steady progress at Riverway,” Cr Molachino said.
“Pinnacles is an important part of our arts community and we are hoping to have exhibitions back on the walls by the end of the year.
“The artwork is ready to rehang - we removed it quickly so it wasn’t damaged in the monsoon and it is currently stored in a safe environment.”
Community and Cultural Development Committee Chair Cr Colleen Doyle said the closure has forced a number of cancellations.
“The gallery is very popular and the monsoon has disrupted a number of exhibitions,” Cr Doyle said.
“We have had to cancel the 2019 youth exhibitions scheduled for September so we won’t be showcasing the Young Artist Awards, ArtNow or the Teacher’s exhibition.
“We are hoping the Education Queensland exhibition, Creative Generations, can be moved to another Townsville venue.
“The repair of the gallery is a huge task and we’d like to thank all residents for their patience.
“The Galleries team is looking forward to reopening Pinnacles and welcoming the community back into the gallery.”
