Insurance a top priority in city’s recovery

Townsville City Council is keeping up the pressure on the insurance industry to respond to outstanding claims following the unprecedented monsoon in February.
Mayor Cr Jenny Hill said Council would host a third insurance roundtable with industry representatives today.
“It is important that we maintain pressure on insurance companies to process and approve claims as quickly as possible,” Cr Hill said.
“While the industry is making progress with a large number of claims, there are still many people in our community who are experiencing problems and frustration with the time it is taking.
“Our priority is to ensure people who are struggling to get back on their feet receive support.
“During the roundtable we will stress the need to speed up the process wherever possible and continue to push for local tradespeople and suppliers to be the first port of call in the recovery work.
“I also encourage residents and business owners when dealing with their insurers to ask for locals to get the work first.”
“The Insurance Council is conducting one-on-one meetings between policy holders and insurers on Friday and Saturday and I would urge anyone experiencing problems to attend.”
Deputy Mayor and Chair of the Townsville Local Recovery and Resilience Group Cr Les Walker said many people in the community were growing impatient with the time it was taking for claims and works to be completed.
“I’d encourage residents and businesses who are continuing to experience problems to attend the one-on-one meetings and the forum the Insurance Council of Australia is organising in the city on Friday and Saturday.”
