Townsville City Council is continuing to support a wide range of community events that contribute to the city’s economic and social wellbeing.
Council is contributing $40,000 towards Magnetic Island Race Week and more than $30,000 to The African Festival.
Community and Cultural Development Committee Chair Cr Colleen Doyle said Race Week is great for the economy.
“Magnetic Island Race Week brings days of sailing and festival activities to the Island and Townsville,” Cr Doyle said.
“Townsville Motor Boat and Yacht Club works hard to help local traders make the most of the event – which has attracted more than 8,000 participants and spectators.
“It attracts sailors and yacht fans to the region so it generates income for local motels, restaurants, cafes and bars.
“Magnetic Island Race Week also attracts national and international media coverage which drives sponsorship of the event.”
Race Week will run from 29 August to 4 September.
Cr Doyle said The African Festival plays an important cultural role in Townsville.
“The Festival educates residents and introduces them to a broad range of African traditions,” Cr Doyle said.
“The performances and stories come from a host of countries including Sudan and Zimbabwe.”
Cr Doyle said the Festival also has important goals within Townsville’s African community.
“The Spirit of Africa Association is looking to re-engage the city’s African teenagers and make sure they don’t lose touch with their cultural heritage,” Cr Doyle said.
“It is important to keep Africa’s diverse traditions alive in North Queensland.”
Residents can attend The African Festival at Riverway Park on 10 August.
A number of smaller grants have also been awarded to:
- Townsville Bicycle User Group
- Sanitarium Health Food Company
- North Queensland Hindu Community
- Townsville Hospital Foundation
- Pasifika Communities of Townsville
- Rollingstone and District Community Association
- Townsville Sportfishing Club
- Piper Promotions
- Townsville Rockwheelers Mountain Bike Club
- Artgaze Lab
The report will go to Full Council on 23 July for final consideration.
