Residents invited to have their say on Council’s Diversity and Inclusion Strategy
Date published: 26 December 2019
Townsville City Council has developed a Diversity and Inclusion Strategy and is looking for residents to have their say now.
The Strategy is a counterpart to the Liveability Study and has been created to ensure there is a community focus on creating equal opportunities for every resident in Townsville.
Townsville Mayor Jenny Hill said the Diversity and Inclusion Strategy is crucial due to the growing and diverse population of the city.
“In Townsville we have a rather unique population and it makes sense to address and understand the diversity of our community,” Cr Hill said.
“Every single resident or visitor to Townsville deserves to feel included and that’s why we’ve developed a strategy that will outline how we can keep diversity and inclusion a central theme in innovation and development.
“Council wants to lead by example in this space and that’s why we’re looking for the community to provide their feedback on this strategy.”
Initiatives completed so far include the development of a Reconciliation Action Plan, conducting mobility mapping of the city and provided disability access beach mats for residents with limited mobility.
Cr Hill said she is proud of the work Council is doing to ensure Townsville is an inclusive city for all.
“It’s so important to embrace every single resident and what makes them unique and Council has been developing programs to make sure our city is a liveable and enjoyable place for everyone.
“We’ve participated in NAIDOC Week celebrations, joined the Welcoming Cities Network, are part of the Mentally Healthy City program and so much more.
“I’d like to see this continued into the future because there is so much good we can do as a Council that keeps diversity and inclusion at the forefront of our decision making.”
