Hampers filled to the brim with Christmas goods are now on their way to those who need them most.
The hampers were made with funds donated to the Mayor’s Christmas Tree Appeal (MCTA) and have been put together this week by hardworking volunteers.
Townsville Mayor Jenny Hill said the generosity shown by locals encapsulated the spirit of Christmas.
“It’s been heart-warming to see so many people from across our wonderful community dig deep and give what they can this festive season,” Cr Hill said.
“We all know Christmas can be a difficult time for many families, and being able to add some cheer to their day is what celebrating Christmas together is all about.”
Cr Hill said it was also a good time to remember to check in with loved ones.
“For some people Christmas can be an isolating time of year, so be sure to pop in to see your family, neighbours and friends as Christmas draws closer,” she said.
This year’s MCTA raised funds through donations, a gala dinner and the All Stars Concert, and was supported by the sponsorship of 25 local businesses.
