Roadworks signal final stage of stormwater upgrades

Townsville motorists are being urged to be patient in Aitkenvale while Townsville City Council crews complete a stormwater and drainage project.
New stormwater and drainage works have been installed in Rendle and Richard Streets and Council crews are reconstructing the roads.
The intersection of Anne, Rendell and Richard Streets at Aitkenvale will be closed from Wednesday 7 August to Friday 16 August.
Infrastructure Committee Chair Cr Mark Molachino said it is an important project for the area.
“The $1 million stormwater and drainage works will make the area more flood resilient,” Cr Molachino said.
“The drainage line runs from Illich Park to the drainage channel behind Aitkenvale Library.
“Council crews have completed the kerb and channel works and the reconstruction of the road is the third and final stage of the project.”
Local Councillor Maurie Soars said detours will guide motorists through the area.
“We will have a traffic management plan in place and we will have signed detours,” Cr Soars said.
“There will be some short-term pain for a long-term gain – this project will have a direct linkage to Illich Park, so it will benefit a lot of people.
“Council is investing heavily in infrastructure – this is part of the $409 million infrastructure spend in the 2019/20 Budget.
“I hope residents and motorists can be patient during the road works.”
Crews will work from 6am to 4pm on weekdays and 6am to 2pm on Saturday.
