Another milestone reached on Townsville’s new pipeline project

The fourth shipment of pipes for Townsville's new water pipeline arrived over the weekend.
The shipment included 462 length of pipe – at 13 metres each. The total number of full-length pipes delivered into the city for the project is 1,842 - totalling about 24km.
Townsville Mayor Jenny Hill said Council was committed to delivering on its commitments to the community, despite the unprecedented monsoon.
"The pipeline project is about ensuring water security for our city well into the future," Cr Hill said.
"Despite the unprecedented monsoon, Stage 1 of the project is scheduled to be complete in March 2020.
"My team of Councillors and I will continue to deliver on our commitments to the community.
"Importantly, this project is getting back to full swing and providing a big boost to our economy as more locals get back to work on site."
Member for Townsville Scott Stewart said that it was essential that work continued on the pipeline, even after a period of torrential rainfall.
"This shipment is another step towards ensuring long-term reliability of supply," Mr Stewart said.
"This project is a priority for Townsville and for the Palaszczuk Government, which is why we committed $225 million - to ensure security and to create employment opportunities for the region."
Townsville Water and Waste Committee Chair Cr Russ Cook said the 36km of pipeline included in Stage 1 was one of the largest projects ever delivered by Council.
"This is a truly a city building project and it will have huge benefits for decades to come," Cr Cook said.
"It's not only providing water security for our city, but it is upskilling our workforce and providing opportunities for local businesses to grow.
"We know that praying for rain is no strategy for long-term water security and that's why delivering this project is so crucial for the city's future."
Cr Cook thanked the Queensland Government for its their $225 million contribution to water security in Townsville.
"The pipeline is a key plank of Council's 3-point water security solution and this project shows what can be achieved when different levels of Government work so collaboratively together," Cr Cook said.

2. A recycled water reuse scheme for public open spaces and industrial use
3. Water Smart Package
