International netball is coming to Townsville for the first time with the Australian Samsung Diamonds set to take on the New Zealand Silver Ferns on Wednesday night.
Townsville City Council is a proud sponsor of the event, providing $50,000 in support to bring the highly anticipated Constellation Cup to the city – cementing Townsville as the major sporting destination in Northern Australia.
Fans of the Australian team will have a chance to meet the girls before they take to the court on Tuesday (9 October) at a Meet and Greet on The Strand.
The event will begin at 1pm where supporters will be given an opportunity to meet their favourite players and ask questions in a Q&A.
Acting Townsville Mayor Les Walker said Townsville is continuing to make a name as the premier sporting destination in regional Australia.
“Townsville is really the place to be for world-class sports and it’s great that we can continue to attract these international sporting events,” Cr Walker said.
“Hosting these matches provides a major boost to our economy and supports local jobs – we want to see it continue well into the future.
“This is the first time the Diamonds have ever played in Townsville; we want the community to really get behind the girls and make sure they come back again.”
Community and Cultural Development Committee Chair Colleen Doyle said this is a fantastic opportunity to support Australian netball and show why Townsville is a great destination.
“Townsville residents are very passionate about sport, and there is a lot of support to bring international sporting to the city,” Cr Doyle said.
“It’s fantastic our young women have the chance to meet such incredible role models and see them play on an international level.
“Watching world-class athletes compete in Townsville is a great way to encourage the next generation of athletes and promote an active lifestyle.”
The Diamonds will take on the Silver Ferns at the Townsville Entertainment & Convention Centre from 6.30pm on Wednesday, 10 October.
