To help locals beat the heat, Townsville City Council is extending the opening hours at Riverway Lagoon until 8pm this week.
The lagoons will be manned by lifeguards during the extended hours to ensure swimmers can enjoy the water while staying safe.
Townsville Mayor Jenny Hill said Townsville is lucky to have a fantastic facility like Riverway to enjoy.
“The Riverway Lagoons are a fantastic family location and it’s great that residents have access to public swimming facilities to cool down during the summer heat,” Cr Hill said.
“There is plenty of shade and trees located around Riverway and it’s a perfect venue to spend the evening with the family.”
Local Councillor Verena Coombe said the extended hours give the community an opportunity to get out of the house once the sun has set.
“Council encourages everyone to practice sun safety – by opening the Riverway Lagoons until 8pm residents can wait until the sun isn’t quite as strong and still enjoy a swim after school and work,” Cr Coombe said
“Riverway is a popular family location so lifeguards will be on-site until 8pm to help keep everyone safe.”
