A new Splash Water Park is being proposed for Riverway as part of the Townsville 2020 Masterplan.
The new Splash Water Park will cater to families and children and blend in with the natural environment at Riverway.
The Riverway Splash Water Park concept design includes four new zones the Billabong, The Shallows, Lily Pad Waterfall Forrest and Inquisitive Play Area and will be located next to the existing lagoon.
The concept design includes installing water jets and lighting effects using the latest LED technology. The Splash Water Park is proposed to be integrated into the existing toddler pool.
New landscaping and seating will be installed to encourage families to enjoy the river while being able to watch their children play in the Splash Water Park.
Mayor Jenny Hill said the Townsville 2020 Masterplan is about ensuring there were world-class residents all throughout the city and suburbs.
“Riverway is much-loved by the local community but we want to make it ever better for young families,” Cr Hill said.
“This new Splash Water Park will be designed to ensure young children under five years old have a space to play and explore in bespoke facility close to where they live.”
Planning and Development Committee Chair Cr Les Walker said the proposal for a new Splash Water Park at Riverway is exciting for locals.
“Townsville 2020 provides a clear vision for our city and Council is determined to ensure the best facilities and infrastructure right throughout our community,” Cr Walker said.
“The Riverway Splash Water Park is a great example of how Council is planning to deliver the best experiences for families in our suburbs.”
Council endorsed the Riverway Splash Water Park concept design at its meeting today.
A community engagement process will now begin with locals given the opportunity to provide their feedback on the concept design.
Local Councillor Verena Coombe said the new Splash Water Park would be a great addition to Riverway.
“There’s no doubt Riverway is one of Townsville’s most loved public spaces and the Splash Water Park will make it even more popular with young families,” Cr Coombe said.
“I’d encourage everyone who lives locally or uses Riverway regularly to have their say about what they want to see included in the Splash Water Park.”
