More jobs flowing from Council’s 3-point water security solution

The first tender to install of Townsville City Council’s recycled water reuse scheme is now open – with the project creating up to 35 local jobs.
Townsville Mayor Jenny Hill said Council has deliberately structured the work packages on the recycled water reuse scheme in a way that ensures local firms have the best chance of securing a slice of the project.
“The project has been broken up into six packages to make sure local businesses get their opportunity to work on the project,” Cr Hill said.
Cr Hill said the recycled water reuse scheme is a key plank in Council’s 3-point water security solution and includes reusing water for public parklands, sports fields and industrial use.
“Council is totally committed to delivering our 3-point water security solution and jobs will keep flowing from these key projects,” Cr Hill said.
“The first works package includes manufacturing and installation of a recycled water pipe through Annandale, starting at Yolanda Drive and finishing at the Glendale Bridge.
“Further work packages on the project will be released shortly.”
The tender package also includes the installation of new sewage infrastructure to run parallel with the water reuse scheme pipes through Annandale.
Townsville Water and Waste Committee Chair Cr Russ Cook said the Southern Suburbs Rising Main project – which received $5 million in funding from the State Government – will allow for future residential growth in the southern suburbs.
“It is important to meet the needs of our growing population with infrastructure that will cater for more residents in Townsville,” Cr Cook said.
“Water security is crucial to grow our local economy so that’s why Council is implementing these water security solutions.”
Council’s 3-point water security solution includes:
- The new 1.8-metre diameter pipeline
- A recycled water reuse scheme for public open spaces and industrial use
- Water Smart Package
