Townsville stinger nets to be removed for dry season

Date published: 14 May 2018

Stinger nets around Townsville will be removed this week as the weather cools and the stinger season ends.

The nets around Townsville and Magnetic Island will be removed by Uninet Enclosure Systems throughout the week.

Community Health and Environment Committee Chair Councillor Ann-Maree Greaney said stinger nets allowed residents and visitors to enjoy our beautiful beaches safely.

“A big part of the Townsville lifestyle involves being able to swim at the beach, which is why our stinger nets are essential for living on the tropical coast,” Cr Greaney said.

“Along with our stinger nets helping to keep us safe in the water our life guards have done a fantastic job again this year keeping swimmers at our beaches safe.”

Uninet Enclosure Systems will ensure the stinger nets are maintained and ready for the beginning of the stinger season in October.

The nets will be removed in the locations as follows:

Monday 14 May

  • Horseshoe and Picnic Bays - Magnetic Island

Tuesday 15 May

  • Both Northern and Southern ends of the Strand

Wednesday 16 May

  • Pallarenda
  • Balgal Beach
