Intersection upgrade to improve travel times and create up to 30 jobs

Townsville City Council is upgrading the intersection at Webb Drive and Ingham Road to improve safety and travel times for motorists and increase productivity for local businesses.
As part of the upgrade, traffic signals will be installed at the intersection, new turning lanes built and the slip lane widened to cater for heavy vehicles.
The upgrade will cater for increased traffic numbers and is expected to create up to 30 jobs over the life of the project.
Infrastructure Committee Chair Cr Mark Molachino said the intersection upgrade will make it easier for motorists to access local businesses in the area and create up to 30 jobs over the life of the project.
“Major intersection upgrades like this one are important to keep our city moving forward and Council is committed to delivering the vital infrastructure Townsville needs,” Cr Molachino said.
“The upgrade of the Webb Drive and Ingham Road intersection will help traffic management of the 13,000 vehicles that use Ingham Road daily, around 25 per cent of which are commercial vehicles.”
Council today voted to delegate the decision on the upgrade to Chief Executive Officer Adele Young to be consistent with the new legislation, which became active yesterday.
Ms Young awarded the $3.9 million contract to BMD Constructions Pty Ltd.
Cr Molachino said the move to delegate the decision ensured the process was open and transparent.
“Council wants to make sure the community has absolute confidence in our decision-making process,” Cr Molachino said.
