City preparations for Commonwealth Games underway
Date published: 8 March 2018
Prominent public spaces in Townsville are getting a makeover in the lead up to the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
The Strand basketball courts will be closed from Monday 12 to 19 March for resurfacing and painting.
WNBL Champions, the Townsville Fire, will have their logo featured on the new surface of the courts.
Townsville Fire Centre, Cayla George, will represent Australia in the Games at the Townsville Entertainment Centre in April.
Victoria Bridge is also being painted as part of the city preparations and is expected to be completed this week.
Council’s Commonwealth Games Working Group Chair Cr Kurt Rehbein said the weather has delayed plans but Council is determined to have the city ready in time for the Games.
“Townsville will be putting its best foot forward as a Gold Coast Commonwealth Games event city,” Cr Rehbein said.
“There will be minor closures around the city during this time, but we know Townsville will look great once the work is complete.”
