Controlled burns to commence at Ross River Dam
Date published: 4 June 2018
Townsville City Council Crews will commence controlled burns on Council land around the Ross River Dam this week.
The burns will commence from 4:30pm today as well as a second burn on Thursday from 4pm.
The first burn is to allow easy inspection of the dam wall, while Thursday’s burn will manage vegetation growth as part of Council’s annual land management program.
Townsville Water and Waste Committee Chair Councillor Paul Jacob said the burns would allow easier access to inspect the Dam wall and limit fire risks in the area.
“These routine burns cut down the chance of fires getting out of control,” Cr Jacob said.
“Overgrown vegetation can increase the chances of fires especially as the dry season sets in.”
A Council controller will be stationed onsite throughout the duration of the burns.
