Townsville Mayor Jenny Hill has congratulated the Townsville Fire for winning their 3rd WNBL championship.
Cr Hill said the Fire proved too good in a convincing win against the Melbourne Boomers in the final home game of the series on Sunday night.
“The Townsville Fire put in an amazing performance over the past week and throughout the whole season,” Cr Hill said.
“Winning the WNBL championship for the third time in four years is a fantastic achievement.
“It’s a well-deserved pay off for all the hard work the team has put in over the past year.
“It’s great to have such dedicated and talented athletes putting Townsville on the map for sports and showing that we have plenty to offer.”
Cr Hill also recognised Townsville Fire Captain Suzy Batkovic and point guard Kelly Wilson.
“I would like to commend Suzy Batkovic on another stellar season- being awarded WNBL MVP 6 times is outstanding.”
“I’d also like to congratulate Kelly Wilson on playing her 350th game Sunday night. A championship title is a great way to celebrate such a significant milestone,” she said.
“I am thrilled we have high-calibre athletic role models for the community and hope that you’ve inspired the next generation of Townsville’s athletes.”
