Free dumping for 2018 Australia Day long weekend
Date published: 19 January 2018
Townsville City Council is throwing open the gates to local tips with free dumping available over the 2018 Australia Day long weekend.
Residents will have access to unlimited free dumping of domestic and green waste from Friday 26 to Sunday 28 January.
Mayor Jenny Hill said the long weekend was a great opportunity for residents to do a big clean-up.
“Many residents like to take advantage of the extra days off and get stuck into those jobs around the house that they’ve been avoiding, so this is the perfect chance to do that,” Cr Hill said.
“Being able to make as many trips to the dump as you need, over three days gives people a little bit more flexibility.”
Tips at Jensen, Hervey Range, Stuart, Toomulla, Bluewater, and Magnetic Island will be open over the free dumping long weekend.
The free dumping offer applies to domestic and green waste only. Commercial waste, tyres, and hazardous waste are excluded.
Cr Hill encouraged residents to clear their yards of rubbish with late season cyclones still a possibility.
“It’s important for people to make sure their yards are free of any loose debris that could become a problem in the event of a cyclone,” she said.
“I’d also encourage people to check in with elderly neighbours, and family and friends who may not have a ute or trailer to take their rubbish to the dump and give them a hand.”
The free dumping long weekend comes as Council has invested $3 million to upgrade Stuart dump.
Townsville Waste Team Manager Matthew McCarthy said the upgrade included a 12-bay transfer station to make it easier for people to get rid of their waste and properly dispose of recyclables.
“Residents using the Stuart dump are now able to sort and dispose of their waste in an efficient, all-weather facility without ever needing to leave the road,” he said.
The upgrades to the Stuart facility will help cope with the increased amount of waste that will enter the landfill as Hervey Range reaches capacity and moves into the rehabilitation phase.
Effective from March 1, the Hervey Range landfill will no longer accept bulk commercial waste or vehicles that need to tip to unload.

Residents are reminded to cover their loads when travelling to drop off their rubbish.
