Kerbside collections off to a strong start

Residents have been taking advantage of the new kerbside hard waste collections with almost half of homes in Zone 1 leaving items out for collection.
Townsville Waste crews collected around 170 tonnes of hard waste from homes in Gumlow, Kelso and Pinnacles during the first two weeks of collections, with the average pile weighing around 90 – 100kg.
Division 4 Councillor Mark Molachino said the community support for the program was encouraging.
“We’re really pleased with the success of kerbside collections so far,” Cr Molachino said.
“In Zone 1 we had around 45 percent of properties putting hard waste out for collection which is great to see and we’re seeing similar results as we start in Zone 2 this week.”
The $2.3 million program which launched in late January was a key election commitment by Mayor Jenny Hill.
The new service allows residents to leave up to two cubic metres of hard waste – including white goods, furniture and televisions – out the front of their home for free collection.
Cr Molachino said most residents were following instructions on what items should and shouldn’t be put out for collection.
“The vast majority of residents are doing the right thing, and we’ve only had a handful of cases where excluded items have been left out for collection,” he said.
Kerbside collection is currently underway in Zone 2 which includes Condon and Rasmussen.
Collections in Zone 3 (Bohle Plains, Condon and Kirwan) are scheduled to begin on 26 February.
Residents in other areas should familiarise themselves with what zone they are in and stay tuned for updates on their commencement date through letterbox drops, radio, TV and print advertising, target social media, and Council’s website.
