Ticket to ride for North Rail Yards redevelopment
Date published: 14 December 2018
The redevelopment and revitalisation of the North Rail Yards is on the right track, with more than 60 companies racing to the platform to enquire about being part of project.
With only a week to go to before the first stage of the process closes, Mayor Jenny Hill urged businesses not to get left at the station by missing the deadline.
“This is an opportunity for developers and investors to put forward their most imaginative and innovative plans to transform that site,” Cr Hill said.
“The North Rail Yards are an important site to ensure the ongoing development in the Waterfront Priority Development Area.
“There’s an opportunity to do something amazing on that site but we just need to discover the right idea.”
Deputy Mayor and Planning and Development Committee Chair Les Walker said the redevelopment of the North Rail Yards will play an important role in the Townsville 2020 Masterplan.
“Townsville 2020 provides a clear vision for our city and it is already giving businesses the confidence to invest in our city and create local jobs,” Cr Walker said
“The huge level of interest in redeveloping the North Rail Yards shows the private sector want to be part of the Townsville 2020 vision for our city’s future.
Local Councillor Colleen Doyle said she hoped the North Rail Yards would soon become a destination in its own right.
“I hope the site gets transformed with public spaces, shops and residential areas and becomes one of the liveliest places in the city,” Cr Doyle said.
“The potential of this site is incredible and any redevelopment should work with other major projects such as the North Queensland Stadium and the new high-end hotel from DoubleTree by Hilton.”
Businesses will be required to submit details for the first stage of the tender process to Council by Friday, 21 December.
