New Entry Statements to welcome visitors to Townsville

Visitors to Townsville will soon receive a much warmer welcome to our city, with Townsville City Council to install new signage at key entry points and suburban centres.
The 2018-19 Budget includes funding to upgrade signage in Condon, Douglas, Heatley, Woodstock and Cluden.
New entry statements on the Bruce Highway and at the Townsville Airport will be prioritised for future funding.
Deputy Mayor and Planning and Development Committee Chair Cr Les Walker said creating new entry statements and suburban signage will help create a more unique and welcoming experience for locals and visitors.
“We want to establish a consistent look and feel with entry statements that greet visitors as they arrive in Townsville,” Cr Walker said.
“We want to showcase the iconic aspects of the city’s lifestyle and support the goal of greening Townsville through its major gateways.
“It’s responsible value for money as the Council replaces ageing signs and begins new projects to mark the city’s suburbs.”
Cr Walker said the Townsville Entrance and Suburb Statements Strategy was an important project in the Townsville 2020 Masterplan.
“Townsville 2020 provides a clear vision for our city and it’s important to ensure that we have a consistent approach to the city’s image,” Cr Walker said.
“The new signs will spruce up our suburbs for locals but also play a key role in informing visitors about our city.
“Importantly, the Townsville 2020 Masterplan will help ensure world-class experience for locals and visitors right throughout our community – regardless of whether you’re in the city or the suburbs.”
City Image Advisory Committee member Cr Ann-Maree Greaney said the city’s entry signage needed to be updated, with an existing large-scale sign on Woolcock Street well within the amalgamated Council boundaries.
“The Townsville Entrance and Suburb Statements Strategy will breathe new life into the city’s image,” Cr Greaney said.
“We’re setting out a consistent approach to delivering physical signage across the city breathing new life into Townsville’s image.
“The concept design for the Entry Statements will pay homage to Castle Hill, which is synonymous with Townsville.”
