Joe Kirwan Park upgrade options out for community consultation

Locals are being urged to have their say on what they want included in the Joe Kirwan Park upgrade.
Townsville City Council plans to enhance the park with new exercise equipment, an upgraded basketball court and a revamped playground.
The Council has developed three concept plans for the play area and work on the fitness facilities will begin this month.
All three playgrounds have a space theme, the first option features Mars rover play equipment and space themed mega deck.
Concept two includes an interstellar dragster and space bike and the third plan features a rocket ship and slide.
Local Councillor Russ Cook said Joe Kirwan Park was popular with locals but its facilities needed a refresh.
“The current facilities require an upgrade and we want to hear from the community about what they want included in the project,” Councillor Russ Cook said
“Joe Kirwan Park is particularly popular with people wanting to play social sport but we want to find out how to make it more attractive for young families as well.”
The project will be funded through the Queensland Government’s Works for Queensland program.
Member for Thuringowa Aaron Harper encouraged locals to have their say on the Joe Kirwan Park upgrade.
“We want to know exactly what locals want as part of this upgrade,” Mr Harper said.
“The Palaszczuk Government is committed to funding first-class community infrastructure in our suburbs through the Works for Queensland program.
“This is going to be another great collaboration between the Palaszczuk Government and Townsville City Council to upgrade a popular suburban park and create jobs for local.”
Infrastructure Committee Chair Cr Mark Molachino said Council was totally committed to delivering top-class infrastructure throughout the community and creating jobs for locals.
“Upgrading our public parks is important because these spaces help build connections in the local community,” Cr Molachino said.
“During construction these projects provide a boost to local businesses and provide job opportunities for locals.
The community engagement process runs until the end of December.
