Date published: 5 April 2018

The Commonwealth Games basketball action tips off tonight at the Townsville Entertainment and Convention Centre with England taking on Scotland in the men’s opening match.

Townsville is hosting Pool A of the women’s competition and Pool B of the men’s competition including 12 preliminary finals and two qualifying finals.

Cr Maurie Soars said it was a unique chance for basketball lovers to catch some world-class sport.

“It’s not every day you have some of the world’s best players in town facing off for a Commonwealth Games gold medal,” he said.

“Local basketball fans will be particularly looking forward to this Sunday night when the Australian Opals take on Canada with our very own Townsville Fire Kayla George.”
