Townsville’s Festival 2018 has come to an end and the event has been a huge hit with locals and visitors.

The Commonwealth Games Closing Event at Jezzine Barracks rounded off Festival with a Beating Retreat by the 3rd Combat Service Support Battalion and live entertainment while the official Closing Ceremony played on the big screen.

The 12 days arts and culture festival had nearly 100,000 people attend activities across the city with 70,000 people visiting Strand Park and 20,000 going to Queens Gardens.

Townsville Mayor Jenny Hill said the festival exceeded all expectations and set a high standard for future events.

“Townsville has definitely been put on the map as an events destination, and over the past two weeks we’ve really demonstrated some of the amazing local talent we have,” Cr Hill said.

“The community was really supportive which is great – the Spiegeltents held 22 sell out shows so I think it’s safe to say that we would like to have them back sometime.

“We’ve also seen that we can host major events like this and that the community will come on board so I would love to see them happen more often.”

During Festival 2018 nearly 700 performers took to stages in over 160 different performances and 800 hours of entertainment, workshops and music.
