Council announces two free dumping weekends

Bring your ute and trailers and help clear yards of rubbish ahead of this year’s cyclone season.
Townsville City Council has announced three days of free tip entry from Friday, October 27 to Sunday, October 29.
Unlimited free dumping of domestic and green waste will be permitted at the Jensen, Hervey Range, Stuart, Toomulla and Bluewater facilities as well as Magnetic Island.
Water and Waste Committee chair Cr Paul Jacob said it was the perfect opportunity to clean up the yard before the cyclone season officially commenced on November 1.
“Gates at the landfills will be open over three days to give everyone the chance to clear their properties of rubbish that could well become missiles should a cyclone hit this season,” Cr Jacob said.
A second free access weekend will be offered in the new year during the Australia Day long weekend – Friday, January 26 to Sunday, January 28.
“You can make as many trips to the landfill as you need over the designated free dump days,” Cr Jacob said.
“A reminder that exclusions include commercial waste, tyres and hazardous wastes that will continue to attract disposal charges.
“I’d also encourage people to check in with elderly neighbours, and family and friends who may not have the means to take their rubbish to the landfills themselves and lend a hand where you can.”
Cr Jacob said traffic management controls would be in place during the free dump weekends.
“Last time we opened the landfills for free they were inundated, so this time we will be better prepared,” he said.
Residents are reminded to cover their loads when travelling to drop off their rubbish.
Green waste is now free to dispose of all year round for domestic customers at the city’s landfills.
