Townsville Mayor Jenny Hill has welcomed Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk’s commitment that a re-elected Labor Government would fully fund the feasibility study into the Lithium-ion battery plant.
“Building this battery plant in Townsville will create 1000 direct jobs and position the city as a leader in high-tech manufacturing,” Cr Hill said.
“I’m extremely pleased the Premier strongly supports the project and has committed to funding the feasibility study.
“The battery plant will charge the city’s economy for decades to come.”
Cr Hill said Townsville’s economy was starting to recover and major projects such as the battery plant will be important to ensure the future looks bright for local workers.
“There’s no doubt Townsville has done it tough over recent years and many of our residents have been struggling, and that’s why Council has been fighting so hard to bring jobs back into the city,” Cr Hill said.
“With state support the battery plant is another step closer to being built – and bringing the thousands of direct and indirect jobs with it.
“We are also hopeful the LNP will match the Premier’s pledge on the battery plant.”
The Premier committed $3.1 million towards the feasibility study from the Palaszczuk Government’s Jobs and Regional Growth Fund.
