New addition to growing CBD street art collection

A new street art mural with a space theme is going up on the back of a Flinders St building.
The mural, by Townsville artists the RUN Collective, depicts a surreal dreamscape/outer space concept that incorporates multi-coloured clouds that leak out of planets and morph into different objects such as UFOs, eyes and patterns.
The work has been commissioned by Townsville City Council as part of its Street Art Activation Framework and joins a number of CBD artworks by local, national and international graffiti artists including ROA, HAHA, Baby Guerrilla, Garth Jankovic and Nicky Bidju-Pryor among others.
Council’s Street Art Activation Working Group member Cr Russ Cook said the new work would add an exciting visual element to the back streets of the CBD.
“Townsville already boasts a number of impressive murals that have become a tourist attraction in their own right,” Cr Cook said.
“These murals help to activate and brighten the CBD landscape.
“We’ve already seen the RUN Collective’s work on the back of the Angus Smith Sportspower building and we’re very pleased to be able to give them the opportunity to design and create a concept of their own for this wall.”
The RUN Collective is a group of Townsville-based multidisciplinary artists who have collaborated from their shared space “The Cot” since 2007.
They also have an exhibition of their work titled Found in Space, currently on display at Perc Tucker Regional Gallery until May 28.
