City's history on display at Heritage Day

Take a step back in time this weekend for Townsville City Council’s Heritage Day.
The free annual event at West End Park this Sunday, May 21 is an opportunity for residents to learn about the city’s past and experience life in a bygone era.
The popular event has entertainment for the whole family with attractions including horse and carriage rides, miniature Cobb and Co ride, live music and guided tours through the historic cemetery plus historic information displays.
There is also cultural food tasting and a damper making display.
For the kids there’s free amusements, free face painting and free fairy-floss.
Council’s Heritage Advisory Committee chair Cr Kurt Rehbein said Heritage Day was a great way for new residents to learn more about the wonderful history of our local area.
“Townsville has such an interesting story to tell – our city boasts colourful characters and fascinating tales of settlement, entrepreneurs and wartime heroics,” Cr Rehbein said.
“Heritage Day is a way to learn more about the city we live in and I encourage long-time locals to come along and enjoy the day as well, there’s a lot on offer.”
A popular feature of the day is the West End Cemetery tour where participants learn the colourful and sometimes tragic stories of the city’s founding families.
A free shuttle bus service will ferry visitors between the event and the National Trust Heritage Centre on Castling St.
Heritage Day will be held May 21 from 10am-2pm.
