A popular Kirwan park has received an upgrade thanks to a partnership between Rotary Club of Townsville Sunrise and Townsville City Council.
Thuringowa Friendship Park at the end of Kern Brothers Drive has new fitness equipment installed under stage 1 of works funded by Rotary’s $60,000 contribution and in-kind support from council.
Stage 2 works currently scheduled for early next financial year will include a barbecue and shelter to be completed by the Rotary club.
Deputy Mayor Les Walker said the upgrade would benefit residents.
“This park is often filled with young families who use the playground and pet owners who use the off-leash dog park, but large parts of the park were still under-utilised,” Cr Walker said.
“The hope the establishment of a fitness circuit will encourage an active lifestyle for local residents, with equipment installed suitable for all ages to use.
“Thanks to this partnership with the Rotary Club of Townsville Sunrise, we’ve been able to undertake these upgrades and make this park even more user-friendly and fun for residents in the area.”
Club president Paul Ryan said the club was delighted to work in partnership with the Council to provide such a facility for the community.
“We are confident that the exercise equipment will be well used as they are in other parks,” he said.
“Rotary Clubs work for their communities and are appreciative of the support they receive from the public.”
