Townsville City Council will share the joys of reading with a young local audience for National Simultaneous Storytime.

The event, now in its 16th year, will feature U20s Cowboys player Mitchell Dunn and local author Nathalie Fernbach as special guests at CityLibraries Thuringowa on Wednesday, May 25.

This year, the book to be shared across the country is I Got This Hat by Jol and Kate Temple.”

Community and Cultural Development Committee chair Cr Colleen Doyle said National Simultaneous Storytime was a colourful, fun event that aimed to promote the value of reading and literacy using an Australian children’s book.

“Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places around the country,” Cr Doyle said.

“Each year the book chosen explores age appropriate themes and addresses key learning areas of the National Curriculum.

“Townsville City Council is pleased to once again be a part of the program to share the joys of reading with our youngest residents.”

In 2015 more than 500,000 children at more than 3,100 locations across Australia took part in National Simultaneous Storytime, reading the book The Brothers Quibble written and illustrated by Aaron Blabey, enjoying a range of supporting educational activities, songs, games, dress ups and lots of fun.
