Low level test blast planned for West End quarry site

Date published: 31 May 2016

Townsville City Council advises that a controlled low level test blast will take place in the old quarry tomorrow (Wednesday, June 1) at 1pm as part of site works for a new reservoir.

The blast is required to test the metrics of the blast settings for the program of weekly blast activities that will shortly commence and continue until the end of the year.

Specialist contractor Orica will perform the test under the supervision of contractor Mendi Constructions.

Residents in the nearby West End area have been letter box dropped as a precaution, although it is a low level blast and unlikely to be heard or noticed.

The site will be closed to public access during the test. Warning signs have been placed in the area on Castle Hill, and the Dianella and the Triandra walking tracks on the hill will be closed to the public.

A warning siren will be sounded a minute before the blast, and again four minutes after the event to advise of the all clear.

The reservoir project is part of the council’s broader CBD Utilities Upgrade that will improve water and waste infrastructure in the inner-city.

Requests for more information on tomorrow’s blast can be directed to the council’s Customer Service Centre on 1300 878 001.
