Townsville’s award winning Jezzine Barracks is set to win over even more locals and tourists and support local jobs with a $2 million package of new facilities.

Hot on the heels of the $2.8 million Strand Waterpark, the Townsville City Council has launched work on Stage 2 of the Jezzine Barracks redevelopment.

The project, fully funded by the Queensland Government, includes construction of an all-access playground, amenities and toilet block, four picnic/barbeque shelters, new park furniture and additional CCTV coverage.

Mayor Cr Jenny Hill said the council was boosting recreational options for residents and tourists with the Jezzine Stage 2 and the Strand waterpark projects.

“The Jezzine Barracks redevelopment has been a huge success story for Townsville, and the new facilities will take the area to another level as a recreational and cultural attraction for the city,” Cr Hill said.

“With Jezzine and the Strand side by side, we have one of the most innovative and stunning foreshores in Australia - so successful that others are copying us.

“The Stage 2 works are facilities that form part of the original master plan for Jezzine but were deferred during the initial redevelopment until funding became available.”

Member for Townsville Scott Stewart said the Queensland Government’s funding for the project was recognition of the importance of Jezzine Barracks as a community and tourism asset.

“The Queensland Government provided $10 million for the initial redevelopment and we’re delighted that Stage 2 will deliver great new facilities that will be in keeping with the historical and cultural significance of the precinct,” Mr Stewart said.

“The project will also support local jobs with two local companies winning tenders to complete a substantial amount of the works.”

Naturform won the contract for the construction of the amenities block and picnic shelters, and Total Landworks, for the playground works.

The new military themed playground will be the star of the Stage 2 works which will be constructed in an area between Cook Street and Isley Street.

Features of the playground include a fortress maze and lookout, double cable ride/flying fox, basket swing, family swing, slide with double bump, space nets, hanging nets, sand pit with buried treasure, drinking fountain, shade sail, seating and extensive landscaping.

The four picnic shelters with barbeques will be constructed along the Cook St side of Jezzine and the amenity/toilet block walking distance away near Jezzine Way.

Work is expected to be completed in late July.
