Local companies benefit from TECC maintenance project

A local roofing company will benefit from the priority maintenance works underway on Townsville’s ageing Entertainment and Convention Centre (TECC).

Townsville City Council today approved awarding a tender to Matz Roofing Pty Ltd to undertake roofing repairs on a rates basis on the centre.

The work is part of the council’s $5 million TECC Maintenance Project which is being funded by the Australian Government through the Federal Department of Infrastructure and Transport’s Community Development Grants Program.

Infrastructure Committee chairman Mark Molachino said the project was creating valuable work for local companies.

“The maintenance project is crucial to ensure the centre is up to standard to stage major events including basketball during the 2018 Commonwealth Games,” Cr Molachino said.

“Work is progressing on schedule and it’s pleasing to see that work is staying in town and benefiting local companies.

“The council is working closely with the centre’s management to ensure the upgrade is carried out with a minimum of disruption.”

Cr Molachino said the project would keep the 23 year-old facility functional for the community until a new centre was developed.

The big ticket item in the package of works – the overhaul of the centre’s air-conditioning system – has already been completed along with an upgrade of the facility’s IT system.

Along with the roofing work, local companies will be asked to quote for upgrades to flooring, and emergency and exit lighting systems scheduled to start rolling out from July.

The TECC Maintenance Project follows work the council funded in October to install a new basketball floor in the centre for Commonwealth Games basketball in 2018.

Under the Australian Government’s funding agreement, the project’s completion is required by February 2017.

Council and Colonial Leisure Group are partners on the Townsville Breakwater Island Entertainment Centre Joint Venture which owns and operates the TECC.
