Budget - Major projects to support city's growth

Townsville City Council will pump more than $40 million into major infrastructure projects to support the city’s future.
The funding is a central plank of the council’s $205.2 million Capital Works Program in the 2016/17 City Budget.
Heading the list is $21.1 million for the four-year CBD Utilities Upgrade which will deliver upgrades to water and wastewater infrastructure throughout the inner-city area.
The project will increase water storage and replace 20km of ageing pipework, some mains up to 60 years old, to support the revitalisation of the CBD.
Future proofing Townsville’s water supply is also a priority with $3.68 million to finalise approvals, agreements and easements for the planned duplication of the Haughton Water Supply Pipeline.
Other key projects include $5million for Stage 2 of the Townsville Recreational Boat Park, $7.1 million for the $51 million Cleveland Bay Treatment Plant Upgrade, and $4.14 million for the Southern Suburbs Rising Main to meet 30 years of growth in the city’s western and southern suburbs.
Mayor Cr Jenny Hill said the council would continue to deliver important infrastructure that would support the city’s lifestyle and growth.
“The council will continue to invest heavily in projects that are essential to ensure Townsville continues to be a great city well into the future,” Cr Hill said.
“All of the major projects funded in this year’s budget provide the basic building blocks that are fundamental for development and progress.”
