Council unveils 2017 theatre season program

Townsville City Council has unveiled its 2017 theatre season today with a packed program of shows for Townsville Civic Theatre and the Riverway Arts Centre.

Highlights of next year’s program include The Marriage of Figaro by Opera Australia, Circus Oz – Model Citizens and Constellations by Queensland Theatre.

Crowd favourites such as the Melbourne International Comedy Festival Roadshow, Queensland Symphony Orchestra and the Festival of One Act Plays will also make a return.

Morning Melodies returns with a mix of old favourites and new faces, including local performers Rachel Cairns and 1RAR Band.

Younger audiences will be delighted by the children’s program with performances such as The Witches by Roald Dahl, Diary of a Wombat by Jackie French, presented by Monkey BAA Theatre Company and Benjamin & Me by Whiskey and Boots, among others.

The popular Riverway Session program will continue at the Riverway Arts Centre with shows such as Warm Waters, Phelan Groovy, A Lady’s Guide to the Art of Being a Wingman and a performance by Women in Docs.

Community and Cultural Development Committee chair Cr Colleen Doyle said she was looking forward to the amazing line-up of performers.

“This program is packed full of amazing talent and highly entertaining shows that cover a large range of topics and interests - there really is something for everyone in 2017,” Cr Doyle said.

“Whether you love music, theatre, dance or comedy, this program covers it all.

“This is also an opportunity to foster a love of the performing arts in children, with a terrific children’s program sure to delight the younger audience and those young at heart.”
