Strand water park playground begins to take shape

Installation of the new Strand water park playground equipment begins this week, with the project still on track to be completed in time for the summer school holidays.

The $2.8 million project includes a larger playground, new softfall, shade structures, lighting as well as an upgrade to surrounding landscaping.

The new equipment arrived last week in four shipping containers from Canada where it was manufactured.

The new water park replaces the former water park, which was in operation for almost 17 years and attracted more than a million visitors over that time.

Deputy Mayor Les Walker said the new water park was sure to be a hit with Townsville families and visitors.

“The new water park will feature additional slides and a dedicated toddler area, but the popular bucket will remain,” Cr Walker said.

“Work is on track for completion by the summer school holidays and we expect the park will be a huge hit over Christmas.”

Divisional councillor Cr Ann-Maree Greaney said the new water park would make the Strand an even more valuable asset for the residents of Townsville to enjoy.

Installation is expected to take about three weeks, followed by the installation of the softfall and landscaping works.
