Yarn-bombing project warms city heart for Christmas

Townsville’s CBD has receive a splash of tropical colour as the Christmas Corals ‘yarn-bombing’ display is installed in Flinders Street ahead of the festive season.

The Inclusive Community Advisory Committee initiative has brought together volunteers and students from a number of schools and community groups to create the woollen artwork as part of Council’s Christmas in the City celebrations.

Committee chair Cr Colleen Doyle said last year’s yarn-bombing initiative was very popular with residents, businesses and city workers and this year’s project would be bigger and better than ever.

"The artwork will be placed right along Flinders St but the major piece is a 4m wide artwork designed by local artist Martina Eliza, that will be installed on the inside of the roof at Townsville Bulletin Square," Cr Doyle said.

"We love to bring more life and colour into the city and during the festive period is the perfect time."

The Christmas in the City events calendar will be launched on Tuesday, December 1 with the unveiling of the CBD Christmas tree and a calendar packed full of entertainment, craft activities and market stalls over the coming weeks.

"The CBD is also the perfect place to buy Christmas presents, with local businesses selling unique stocking fillers – often items that can’t be found in the major shopping centres," Cr Doyle said.

"We encourage everyone to shop local and support businesses in our city."
