Public Interest Disclosures

Council’s Public Interest Disclosure Policy and Procedure outline its commitment to investigating all public interest disclosures in a confidential and timely manner.

We encourage and support public interest disclosures (including verbal and anonymous disclosures) of suspected wrongdoing in Council and will take appropriate action to deal with each disclosure.

Who can make a Public Interest Disclosure and what about?

Any person, including a public sector officer, may disclose information about:

  • a substantial and specific danger to the health or safety of a person with a disability
  • a substantial and specific danger to the environment (as set out in the PID Act)
  • reprisal action in relation to a PID

A public sector officer may also disclose information about:

  • corrupt conduct by another person
  • maladministration that adversely affects someone’s interests in a substantial and specific way
  • a substantial misuse of public resources
  • a substantial and specific danger to public health or safety
  • a substantial and specific danger to the environment

IF IN DOUBT, REPORT.

Council recognises that the discloser may not wish to be identified during the course of an investigation and will do everything possible to protect the discloser's identity and will not disclose it without their consent except as required by law.

The Chief Executive Officer may intervene directly to protect the disclosure and take immediate action to deal with suspected reprisal.
