Heritage Information Kit

The Integrated Planning Act 1997 requires planning schemes address any valuable features within the local government area. Under the Act, 'valuable features' are defined as 'areas or places of cultural heritage significance (such as areas or places of indigenous cultural significance, or aesthetic, architectural, historical, scientific, social or technological significance, to the present generation or past or future generations)'.

In 1993 a heritage study was undertaken, identifying over 1200 places of significance in the inner and older suburbs worthy of conservation (and a further 60 places in the CBD of value to Townsville) and these form the basis of the Local Heritage Database.

Through its seven guides, the Special Projects Unit of the Townsville City Council provides a community service to aid in the conservation of the city's heritage.

For more information, please phone 4727 9000 or contact the Special Projects Unit.
