CBD Revitalisation
Townsville is one of Australia's most vibrant and liveable cities. It has become an exciting hub of residential and commercial development, and Townsville City Council is committed to revitalising the Central Business District (CBD) as the focal point of the City's continued economic and commercial growth.
What will the CBD look like
The CBD Masterplan and the Townsville City Plan
Since 2000, the city has been redeveloped in accord with the CBD Masterplan. The CBD Masterplan is currently being reviewed to incorporate major residential developments, the expansion of Port activities and the Breakwater Precinct. The City Plan codifies the vision of the CBD Masterplan and will guide the growth and development of Townsville over the next decade and beyond.
A particularly important project during 2008 will be the finalisation of planning for the redevelopment of the Flinders Street precinct, including Flinders Mall.
Transport, Car Parking, and Pedestrian Access
As the inner city becomes an increasingly vibrant centre for living, working, and leisure, Townsville City Council is developing strategies for infrastructure and services that will strengthen the CBD's growth. Alongside transport, a major goal is the improvement of pedestrian access. Future plans include pedestrian walkways along Ross River as part of a network that will extend from Palleranda to the Upper Ross by 2010.
What has been happening
Development in Townsville has been booming in recent years with approximately $255 million in development approvals for residential and commercial premises in the CBD being issued between 1 January 2001 and 31 December 2006, and over $1 billion in development projects proposed in the central business district for development in the near future.
