Advisory Committees

The Community Development Section supports five of Council's Advisory Committees. Council staff attend meetings and action any initiatives that are recommended through the Advisory Committees after being approved by Council.

Council is calling for members of the public to nominate to stand on these five advisory committees. Below you will find information about each committee, including how to nominate to stand on a committee in your field of interest. Nominations close on Friday 18th September.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander

An Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Advisory Committee will identify and advise Council on current and emerging Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander issues within Townsville City Council and the community.

The role of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Advisory Committee is to:

  • Serve as an information link between community members/groups and Townsville City Council
  • Support the link between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander groups in the community
  • Provide a process for input and feedback regarding the planning and provision of services, facilities and programs for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander
  • Promote the awareness of issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders in the community
  • Support and monitor the development of a culture of community inclusion, and
  • Advocate for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders and their needs at local, State and Commonwealth level.

Nominating for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Advisory Committee

You may nominate to stand on the Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander Advisory Committee by completing an application form (download below) and responding to the following key criteria:

Key selection criteria (maximum 200 words per criterion):

  1. Explain your understanding of the needs and issues relating to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders in the Townsville community.
  2. Identify your key interest area in relation to section 5 – Membership within the Terms of Reference PDF Document (100kB).
  3. How will you provide input to the committee and feedback to the community with regard to the planning and provision of services, facilities and programs for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community?

Disability

A Disability Advisory Committee will identify and advise council on current and emerging disability issues affecting Townsville City Council and the community.

The role of the Disability Advisory committee is to:

  • Monitor and Report on the implementation of the Townsville City Council Disability Action Plan;
  • Provide a process for input and feedback regarding the planning and provision of services, facilities and programs for people with a disability;
  • Promote disability awareness within the local community;
  • Encourage community inclusion of people with a disability; and
  • Advocate for people with a disability and their needs at local, State and Commonwealth level.

Families

A Families Advisory Committee's role is to identify and advise council on current and emerging family issues affecting Townsville City Council and the community.

The role of the Families Advisory committee is to:

  • Advise council on current and emerging issues affecting families;
  • Provide the community with a process for input into the planning and provision of services and facilities for families;
  • Provide a process for feedback from council to the community regarding issues associated with families; and
  • Advocate for families and their needs at local, State and Commonwealth level.

Seniors

The Townsville Seniors' Advisory Committee will identify and advise Townsville City Council on current and emerging seniors' issues within the Townsville City Council Local Government Area and the community.

The role of the Townsville Seniors' Advisory Committee is to:

  • Monitor and report on the implementation of the Townsville City Council Seniors' Action Plan 2009 – 2011 when developed and approved;
  • Provide a process for input and feedback regarding the planning and provision of services, facilities and programs for seniors;
  • Promote awareness of seniors and seniors' issues within the local community,
  • Encourage community inclusion of seniors, and
  • Advocate on behalf of seniors regarding their needs to Townsville City Council, for referral to State and Commonwealth Governments.

  1. Explain your understanding of the needs and issues relating to seniors in the community.

Women

A Women's Advisory Committee will identify and advise Council on current and emerging women's issues within Townsville city Council and the community.

The role of the Women's Advisory committee is to:

  • Support the link between women and women's groups in the community;
  • Provide a process for input and feedback regarding the planning and provision of services, facilities and programs for women;
  • Promote the awareness of issues affecting women in the community;
  • Support and monitor the development of a culture of community inclusion; and
  • Advocate for women and their needs at local, State and Commonwealth level.

Community Safety

The Townsville Community Safety Advisory Committee will identify and advise Townsville City Council on current and emerging issues relating to the improvement of Community Safety and Crime Prevention within the Townsville City Council Local Government Area.

The role of the Community Safety Advisory Committee is to:

  • Consult with relevant community members to identify and assist to prioritise issues relating to community safety.
  • Provide input into the development of a Townsville City Council Community Safety Plan and promote its implementation.
  • Provide advice to Council on a wide spectrum of current trends relating to specific and general community safety issues with local, regional, national and international considerations.
  • Work in collaboration with key agencies and members of the community to promote awareness of community safety issues.

Nominating for the Safety Advisory Committee

You may nominate to stand on the Safety Advisory Committee by completing an application form (download below) and responding to the following key criteria:

Key selection criteria (maximum 200 words per criterion):

  1. Explain your understanding of at least three important issues relating to community safety and their impact or potential impact on residents of Townsville.
  2. Identify your key interest area in relation to section 5 – Membership within the Terms of Reference PDF Document (94kB).
  3. How will you provide input to the committee and feedback to the community with regard to the planning and provision of services, facilities and programs for community safety?
