GAP- Get Active in Parks

Townsville West young people have had the opportunity to Get Active in Parks on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. Townsville City Council coordinated programs from October 2008 to June 2009, offering a safe and supportive environment for young people to develop new skills and engage with their community.
Throughout the course of the program GAP had in excess of 1,800 participants with an average of 26 at each session.
Lifeline North Queensland are currently continuing to run programs on a Thursday afternoon at Heatley Park on Fulham Rd from 3.30pm. Lifeline were an integral partner in the GAP program and the support and contributions are greatly appreciated.
What it was all about
Local parks were filled with young people (high school aged) enjoying a range of sporting and recreational activities. In addition they were able to enjoy newly revamped Urban Fun Object (UFO)!
What sports were on offer

An array of sports were organised every Tuesday and Thursday, including
- Australian Rules Football
- Basketball
- Cricket
- OzTag
- Rugby League
- Rugby Union
- Soccer
- Touch Football
What recreation activities are on offer
An array of activities were organised Thursdays, such as:
- Artistic workshops
- Lifestyle workshops
- Team building challenges
- Parkour
When was it launched
Tuesday 7 October 2008 at Heatley Park.
What was the aim of the program
To provide an opportunity for positive social interaction between young people and to facilitate the development of social networks and team based communication skills.
GAP - Get Active in Parks is funded by the Queensland Government Community Renewal program co-ordinated by the Department of Housing in partnership with Townsville City Council, with support from Lifeline Community Care Queensland.
