Create Your Youth Week 2010

Create Your Youth Week - under Construction

What is National Youth Week?

National Youth Week is the largest celebration for young people in Australia. It offers lots of opportunities for young people aged 12 to 25 years to:

  • showcase their talents, contributions and achievements
  • exchange their ideas and views
  • attend live events
  • raise issues of concern to them
  • act on issues that affect their lives
  • participate in new activities and learn new skills.

Youth Week also gives the wider community an opportunity to:

  • hear what young people have to say
  • promote and celebrate the positive contributions young people make to their communities
  • address issues that concern young people.

National Youth Week 2010 will be celebrated from 10 to 18 April 2010.

What is Create YOUR Youth Week?

Townsville City Council and the Townsville Youth Council are on the hunt for inspirational youth ideas that can be transformed into a Townsville-based National Youth Week activity.

Who can get involved?

Anyone living in Townsville, aged between 12 and 25 years of age can get involved. You can get involved as an individual or as a group.

What sort of event can I hold?

The sky is the limit! It could be a hip hop workshop, skate or BMX display, giant pool party, or anything else that people your age would be interested in. As long as the event is broad enough that it would be interesting to more than just your direct group of friends, we'll consider it.

What's involved in Create YOUR Youth Week?

There are a few things you need to know before you start your application for Create YOUR Youth Week.

Basically, Townsville City Council is throwing control over to you: you come up with the idea, you plan the event, and you help manage it on the day. Our Youth Development Team will be there to help you along the way and provide advice, assistance and some funding but you'll need to take the lead and make it happen!

  • If your application is successful, your project group must be able to commit to being involved in planning meetings from the end of January 2010 through to the end of March 2010, (supported by Council Youth Development Officers) to make sure your event runs smoothly.
  • All events must be alcohol and drug free (even if participants are over 18 years of age).
  • Your event must be held in a location(s) that's easily accessible by young people.
  • Your event must be held between 10 and 18 April 2010.
  • Your project group need to be able to run the activity and have some fun.

How will my idea be turned into reality?

Townsville City Council will support the successful application(s) by:

  • Providing sponsorship up to $3,000 towards the development and actual resources required to run your event (sponsorship money will be held and managed by our Youth Development Team).
  • We'll link one of our Youth Development Officers to your project group to provide advice and assistance with:
    • Event planning and risk management
    • Budgeting and paying bills associated with your event
    • Promoting your activity within a Townsville-based National Youth Week poster
    • Assistance on the day of your event

I want to apply, what do I do?

  • Have a think about what activities you would like to see happen during National Youth Week here in Townsville. You don't have to limit it to just one event, you may want to put forward several ideas.
  • Organise a group of friends 12 to 25 years of age to work with you on your idea.
  • Complete and return the Create YOUR Youth Week Application Form (below) to Townsville City Council by October 30 2009. Complete a separate form for each event you want to submit.
  • You will hear back from one of our Youth Development Officers by the end of November to let you know if your application has been successful.
