Queensland’s waste disposal levy proposal
From 1 December 2011, the Queensland Government will introduce waste reforms that will change the way Queensland manages commercial, industrial, construction and demolition waste disposal. From this date, a waste disposal levy will be charged to operators disposing of waste in landfills throughout Queensland.
The proposed levy is a price paid by waste disposal site operators in relation to commercial, industrial, construction, demolition and regulated wastes delivered to a waste disposal facility. The levy is largely an avoidable charge and the more recycling, the lesser the levy liability. See here for more information about the proposed levy.
As a result of these changes from 1 December 2011, the fees at Townsville City Council landfills will rise to cover council’s levy liability. A full list of landfill fees is available.
Further information on waste reforms in Queensland can be found by reading the “Rethinking waste in Queensland business” brochure or visiting the Department of Environment and Resource Management’s website.
